Reading Between the Lines...

Trinity Presbyterian Church is a vibrant community. In addition to the many spiritual and worship activities, Trinity is also a host to social groups. Book clubs are one facet of our social get togethers. The oldest book club at Trinity offers up a monthly fiction book chosen at a friendly lunch gathering at the end of the previous season. Check out their announcements in the Tidings to get more info.

There is another book club at Trinity. It started in 2020 when a group of folks began to read Reading the Bible From the Margins, by Miguel A. De La Torre. Instead of a monthly gathering, this group met weekly to discuss the book a few chapters at a time and really delve into the text and its meaning for our lives now.

It’s been 4 years now and the weekly book club, now called Between the Lines, has explored several social justice topics in depth, by reading relevant books and discussing them over Zoom for an hour each week. We don’t have a fun annual luncheon, but we certainly have grown in relationship with each other and learned about fascinating subjects such as racism, immigration, incarceration, poverty and White Christian Nationalism. We’ve even had authors and subject matter experts join our discussions.

According to our pastor, Mark Stanley,

I've learned more about social justice from this book group than from any other previous education.

We’re taking the summer off to rest our brains and spirits to reconvene in the fall to dive into more reading about how we live in this world and what it looks like to follow Jesus’s second great teaching:

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

On 5 September, we’ll start reading White Poverty; How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy by Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II with Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove. There will be a reminder article in the Tidings in August. I hope you can join us!
